If You Don't Learn How to Let Go of the Past Now, You'll Hate Yourself Later

Letting go of the past is never easy.

We all have memories of people and places that we associate with pain and heartache.

If you’re reading this blog, you’re ready to move on!

5. Self-Talk

The way you talk to yourself matters!

Instead of saying “I can’t believe I had such awful things happen to me in life,” try telling yourself what you’re grateful for.

The situation probably could have been worse. Focus your attention on the positives and you’ll have a better attitude, which will allow you to let go.

4. Express It

Express your negative feelings. If you’re angry and want to smash a plate, do it!

If you’re sad and need to talk about it, call up your best friend. If you’re feeling lonely, let yourself wallow for a day or two.

Let yourself feel the feeling deeply and then eventually, it will wash away. Give yourself permission to express your emotions.

3. Get Away From It

Getting physical or psychological distance can be helpful.

It is important not to remain to close to the problems that you had in the past. In order to move on, you literally need to move on.

Avoiding a person or place because it brings back terrible memories and associations is perfectly fine. If you need to get away from a situation let yourself get away.

2. Focus On Yourself

Be gentle and kind with yourself. Don’t criticize yourself for having a hard time letting go.

Everyone moves at a different pace. Try not to compare yourself to others.

Surround yourself with people and things that bring you joy and pleasure. Self-care is critical if you want to let go of the past.

Take a bath, read a good book, get your nails done, go to a sports bar with friends, meditate, or play a sport. Do whatever makes you feel good!

1. Get Out There

If you’re trying to let go of the past it’s time to enjoy your current circumstance.

Go to new restaurants, new beaches, new hikes, and new parks. Use technology to meet new people as well. Pick up a new hobby and have some fun with it.

Trying new things and meeting new people will expand your world. You’ll develop deeper relationships and more connections, which will help you to let go of the past.

You’ll be having so much fun with your new circle of friends that you’ll forget all about being hurt in the past.

It is never fun to be kept up at night going over the memories of the people in your life who hurt you so deeply.

You’re avoiding everything that once brought you so much happiness and now brings you sorrows.

Still, there’s a whole incredible world out there. Express your emotions, focus on yourself, get away from past associations, and then build a new life. Make new friends and find new hobbies.

Once you’re content in the present you probably won’t be kept awake reminiscing about the past.
